Masoor Dal (Indian Red Lentil Curry)

I’ve eaten this dish many times because I used to live next door to a lovely Gujarati family who used to cook this on a regular basis. It’s one of my favourite lentil dishes, and it’s vegetarian too!

Ingredients:

1 tbls vegetable oil

1 onion

300g red lentils

2 tsp cumin seeds

3 cloves of garlic

1 tsp grated ginger

1 tsp salt

Half tsp chilli powder

1 tsp turmeric powder

2 green chillies (optional)

Half tsp coriander powder

1 chopped tomato

1 litre water

Fresh coriander

Method:

Wash the lentils in around 4 changes of water and drain.

Add the cumin seeds to 1 tbs vegetable oil and fry for 2 minutes on a low/medium heat. Make sure they don’t burn and keep stirring. Add finely chopped onion and fry on a medium heat for around 5Ā  minutes. Add the grated garlic and ginger (green chillies if you choose) and mix for 1 minute.

Next add the salt, chilli powder, turmeric and coriander powder. Cook this for 4 minutes stirring continually.

Now add 1 chopped tomato and cook for a further 2 minutes then add the drained red lentils and the 1 litre of water.

Stir and cook on a medium heat for around 20 minutes until the lentils are soft. Add more water if you like a thinner consistency.

Add the fresh chopped coriander leaves to serve.
