Samuel Barber – Adagio for Strings
I don’t really know where to begin with an introduction to this piece of music, or how to explain why it is my ultimate favourite. Music to me brings back memories. When I was a child, my father, who was a musician, instilled in me a love of classical music, and we used to listen to it a great deal together. I learned a lot from him – he was my best friend. This is the piece I love more than any other and I’ve listened to it for years. It was played at the funeral of John F Kennedy, and was also the soundtrack from ‘Platoon’. To me, it has an essence of sadness, but it moves towards a finale of love and hope.
